Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde Flags 50 Kg Plastic Found in Cow’s Stomach

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has raised concerns after 40-50 kg of plastic was reportedly removed from a cow’s stomach. A free veterinary camp in Ghatkopar is offering surgeries and treatment to more than 110 registered animals.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has urged citizens to stop disposing of food in plastic bags after highlighting a case in which 40-50 kg of plastic was reportedly removed from a cow’s stomach during surgery. She made the appeal on Wednesday while inaugurating a two-day free veterinary surgery camp in Ghatkopar, aimed at providing medical treatment to sick and injured animals.

The camp is being held at Aradhya Bhakti Park (Police Hockey Ground) in Ghatkopar East. More than 110 sick and needy animals had been registered for free surgeries and medical treatment by the first day. The initiative is jointly organised by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Maharashtra government’s Animal Husbandry Department and the Arham Yuva Seva Group (Arham Always Care), under the inspiration of Rashtrasant Shri Namramuni Maharaj.

Addressing the inauguration, Tawde appealed to citizens to show greater compassion towards animals suffering from serious illnesses, injuries and painful medical conditions that they cannot communicate to humans.

During her inspection of the camp, the mayor expressed concern over the impact of plastic waste on stray cattle. She said people often feed animals using plastic bags or leave leftover food wrapped in plastic on roads. Hungry cows and buffaloes then consume the bags along with the food, putting their health at risk.

Tawde described the removal of 40-50 kg of plastic from a cow’s stomach during surgery as a deeply distressing sight. She urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and contribute towards making Mumbai, Maharashtra, and the country plastic-free.
